When I took office in October 2010, I promised independent leadership, free from cronyism and partisan politics. This is a bedrock principle of my administration.
No more “Politics As Usual”.
“Politics as usual” fails us when elected officials make decisions motivated by party affiliation or political favors instead of merit, or when they kick the can down the road instead of tackling tough issues and taking responsible action today. The shift from “politics as usual” to professionalism is a fundamental change is culture, and we are applying it throughout the city.
Accountability and transparency.
We are taking concrete steps to make city government more transparent, so the public can hold us accountable for our decisions and actions. We created can-do.honolulu.gov, a transparency website that gives access to government data in a searchable, downloadable, usable format, at no cost to the public. And in 2012, a national organization that promotes government transparency honored the city with a Sunny Award. These awards recognize governments that are doing an exemplary job at proactively disclosing information to taxpayers. this wording is from the news release
